Michal Hába (1986) studied directing at the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. He worked as an assistant to the directors Dušan D. Pařízek and Alexander Riemenschneider at Divadlo Komedie. He also served internships at Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz (with Frank Castorf) and Maxim Gorki Theater (with Sebastian Baumgarten). He took part in the Berliner Theatertreffen International Forum (2016).
He is the head of the theatre ensemble Lachende Bestien, which is considered one of the most progressive theatre troupes on the Prague theatre map and which avows political and appellative theatre: e.g. 120 Days of Freedom, Ferdinand!, Szechwan (basierend auf Brecht) or The Mission. His production of Schwab's Pornogeography was awarded the Josef Balvín Award in 2016.
He also works with Divadlo koňa a motora (theatre of horse and engine), which combines the tradition of travelling theatre with a community and social overlap, while aiming at bringing peripheral areas back in touch with culture. Their most well-known project is Othello is Black performed in the Šluknovsko region. He regularly cooperates with Divadlo Husa na provázku, where he will present an original adaptation of Dostoevsky's TheGambler in the upcoming season and with Klicperovo divadlo Hradec Králové where he directed his last production of Schimmelpfennig's play Das schwarze Wasser(The Black Water) in its Czech premiere.
Divadlo na cucky is an open space for culture, located on Dolní náměstí (Lower Square) in the heart of Olomouc. Apart from their own pieces, the theatre focuses on presentation of visiting artists, creative workshops for all generations and support for social dialogue through discussions and lectures. The cultural centre also includes Café na cucky and XY Gallery.
The theatre creates its own repertoire which comprises a wide spectrum of texts from contemporary plays to original creations. The distinctive poetics, focused on experimenting and searching for new means of communication, are influenced not only by visiting directors (Tereza Říhová, Zuzana Burianová, Michal Hába), but also by in-house ones (the artistic director Silvia Vollmannová).
