The personal life of an indisputable legend of world cinematography, his creative methods, his views on cinema (and the meaning of art in general) in exclusive memories provided by Bergman’s friends and colleagues (the producer Katinka Faragó), family (his son Daniel, or one of Bergman’s many wives – the actress Liv Ullmann), but also major film personages influenced by his work and legacy (Carlos Saura and Jean-Claude Carrière).
This biographical documentary, which had its Czech premiere at last year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, provides a diverse range of insights into the iconic personality of a film and theatre director, screenwriter and successful writer, who has been a lifelong inspiration for the documentary filmmaker herself. One of the most respected German directors admits without sentiment of her love for Bergman’s works, which inspired her to pursue the magical world of cinematography.
The noteworthy and prominent New German Cinema artist has created a number of internationally acclaimed works, often devoted to stories of strong female heroines (Rosa Luxemburg, Hannah Arendt). In cooperation with her husband Volker Schlöndorff, she created two of the most crucial works of western Germany cinematography of the 1970s – The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum (1975) and The Tin Drum (1979). A stage adaptation of Grass’ legendary novel (Berliner Ensemble, directed by Oliver Reese) will be presented at the 23 Flora Theatre Festival on the same day as the document by Margarethe von Trotta.
The screening of the Searching for Ingmar Bergman film is organized in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut in Prague.
