Against the Wall / Proti zdi
A characteristic trait of the Flora Theatre Festival is its clear dramaturgical definition – its motto for this year is: “Against the Wall / Proti zdi”.
The festival audiences will be confronted with unusual stories of nonconformist heroines and heroes – protagonists of daring and radical gestures but also stumbling outsiders whose life mishaps and often recurring “blows against the wall” are depicted and commented on by prominent directors with a distinctive staging style. The Czech and Slovak drama program section is represented by progressive ensembles and original creators (David Jařab, Jan Mikulášek, Rastislav Ballek, Ivan Buraj, Jan Nebeský, Kamila Polívková, Ondrej Spišák and Michal Hába), whose long-term direction and selected titles communicate with the festival leitmotif in various ways: they are very authorial, unorthodox adaptations of an original theme, visually innovative and often using playful hyperbole and harsh irony (drenched with black humour). The dramaturgy of last year was explicitly “politically oriented”, including vivid discussions about the appellative impression that some of the productions provided.
I believe that the introspective themes of the 22 nd Flora Theatre Festival, presented by powerful authors and performers, will give rise to just as heated debates. The majority of the productions “resonate in society” with the same vigour, albeit in a formally more sophisticated and at first glance less obvious manner.
The theatre-makers, actors and actresses, that we have invited to Olomouc this year, are interested in “making theatre” which responds to the questions and issues of the times in which they live and create (this seemingly banal postulate is not at all that common in our theatre environment) and this by means of highly defined aesthetics as well as uncompromisingly articulated attitudes.
They do this each time with authentic stubbornness and without regard to whether they meet with rejection or “hit the wall of incomprehension”…
